Notes: Confined Space and Collapse Medicine

Course Description:
This intensive 6-hour course provides paramedics with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to operate effectively and safely in confined space and structural collapse environments. Combining focused lectures with immersive practical scenarios, this course prepares pre-hospital providers to deliver advanced medical care in some of the most challenging and hazardous rescue conditions.
Paramedics will explore the unique physiological, environmental, and logistical challenges presented by confined spaces and structural collapses. Emphasis will be placed on risk assessment, interagency coordination, patient access and extrication, and modified medical decision-making in austere or delayed-access scenarios.
The practical component allows participants to apply lecture content in simulated confined space and collapse environments, incorporating rescue team collaboration, improvised packaging techniques, and critical interventions under physically restrictive conditions.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Identify and mitigate the medical and environmental risks associated with confined space and collapse incidents.
Apply adapted clinical decision-making strategies in restricted and austere environments.
Demonstrate effective patient assessment, treatment, and extrication techniques within confined and collapsed spaces.
Integrate into multidisciplinary rescue teams using clear communication and unified command principles.
