Course Description:
This course prepares EMS providers to safely and effectively respond to students with complex medical, behavioral, and developmental needs in school settings. Instruction emphasizes clear communication, trauma-informed care, and the boundaries of EMS involvement during high-stress situations. Learners will gain insight into the role of school staff, family engagement, and approved safety strategies. The program combines lecture, discussion, facility tour, and case review to build confidence in managing both medical and behavioral presentations.

Objectives:
• Describe two EMS actions that build trust during a parent-reported emergency.
• Identify three EMS considerations in children with special healthcare needs.
• Apply two de-escalation steps for individuals with autism or sensory overload.
• Differentiate medical vs. behavioral drivers during Emotional Regulation Impairment (ERI) events.
• Identify and explain three safety features during a facility tour and their impact on care.
