Course Description:
This 2 hour continuing education presentation introduces EMS providers to the principles, protocols, and practical considerations for administering low-titer O whole blood (LTOWB) in the prehospital setting. It emphasizes clinical indications, safety measures, logistics, and integration of whole blood into trauma resuscitation workflows.
The course covers:
Foundations and rationale for whole blood use
Hemorrhage control techniques as a prerequisite to transfusion
Physiological principles including the lethal triad and lethal diamond
Adjunct medications like TXA and calcium
Operational protocols specific to Virtua Health EMS
Recognition and management of transfusion reactions
Objectives:
Describe the rationale for using low-titer O whole blood (LTOWB) in the prehospital setting.
Identify key hemorrhage control techniques required before initiating transfusion.
Explain the physiological considerations in trauma resuscitation and the role of medications.
Apply operational procedures for whole blood administration
Recognize and manage potential transfusion reactions in the prehospital environment.
Participants must complete a post-test and course survey to receive CEH.
