Course Title: 911 BLS Orientation

Duration:  16 Hours (Two- 8-hour days)

Format: Live Instructor Led (pre-course work may be assigned after registration)

Course Description:

This course prepares EMTs transitioning from medical transport or new to 911 operations for the demands of emergency response. Students will learn the core principles, expectations, and responsibilities of working within a 911 BLS system. The course reviews system organization, response protocols, and operational procedures, emphasizing patient assessment, communication, and teamwork in high-stress environments.

Learners will practice scene safety, radio communication, and initial patient management during emergency calls. Realistic scenarios will reinforce decision-making, prioritization, and coordination with law enforcement, fire, and ALS resources. Documentation standards and professional conduct for 911 responses will also be covered.

This orientation promotes readiness, confidence, and competence for EMTs entering 911 field operations.

Objectives:

  • Describe the role, expectations, and responsibilities of an EMT operating in a 911 BLS system.
  • Identify key components of 911 system, including dispatch, response models, and resource coordination 
  • Demonstate safe scene size-up and scene safety best practices
  • Prioritize patient care and scene tasks based on patient presentation and available resources 
  • Identify when and how to request additional resources (law enforcement, fire, ALS)
  • Apply basic documentation standards and professional conduct for prehospital encounters 

This class will occur in person. Participants must complete a post-test and course survey to receive any CEH.
